CORE TRAINING

Core training areas for officers and staff of the Sylvania Township Police Department are outlined in an annual training plan published before the beginning of each budget year. The plan outlines core training issues and those that are designated by the Chief of Police as additional training needs.

The Sylvania Township Police Department considers the following as core training areas in which employees must demonstrate the required skills and abilities as outlined by the department for their position. Training in the core areas will be provided on a yearly basis except CPR and AED training. These are required every two years.

· Blood borne Pathogens

· Defensive Tactics

· Domestic Violence

· Employee Right to Know

· Fire Extinguisher

· First Aid, CPR and AED

· Hazardous Materials

· Infectious Diseases

· Legal Update

· Use of Force Issues(decision making, restraints, post force monitoring)

· Vehicle Operations

· Weapons (firearms, impact, ASR and others authorized)

· Pepper Spray

· Review of Department Policy and Procedure

· Taser

· LEADS, MDT’s

Employees are continually afforded opportunities to learn develop and become educated.  This is accomplished, in part, be reviewing and discussing rules, policies, procedures, philosophy, practices of the department and current cas law applicable to their performance as employees.  The purpose is to assist employees in performing their essential job functions.  As an example, employees may e provided briefings, videos, periodicals, magazines, bulletins, newsletters, books, or lectures.  Training may also include discussion of current events, incident debriefing and public policy issues and performing mechanical and motor skills important to the job.

Employees requiring specialized training to meet the knowledge skills and abilities of their job classification will be provided opportunities to meet those needs.
