Township Talk January 23
To the rescue
At the Jan. 16 meeting of the Sylvania Board of Trustees, Sylvania Township Fire Chief Mike Ramm honored several members of his department and a township police officer for their heroic efforts during two life-threatening incidents. The first occurred on Oct. 24. A 40-year-old roofing worker was electrocuted when the aluminum ladder he was holding came in contact with a high-tension line. A member of his crew started CPR and treatment was taken over by the Engine 61 crew. The patient was unconscious and did not have a pulse. After crews defibrillated him, he had a pulse and resumed breathing. He was transported and treated at Toledo Hospital and is back to work with no side effects.
On Nov. 27, retired Sylvania Township Accounting and Budget Supervisor Scott Smith experienced cardiac arrest while on a treadmill at Planet Fitness. Off-duty Sylvania Township Police Detective Randy Mull happened to be at the gym and was able to start CPR and the automated external defibrillator (AED), which engine crew 64 continued until Smith had a return of pulse and began breathing. He was transported to Flower Hospital and transferred to Toledo Hospital where he recovered.
Trustee reorganization
Neal Mahoney was elected chairman and John Jennawine was elected vice chairman in a special meeting before the regular meeting of the Sylvania Township Board of Trustees Jan. 16.
During the regular meeting, Road/Service Superintendent Rob Nash was authorized to purchase a 2025 HV607 truck chassis for $100,827 from Rush Truck Centers Inc. He was also given approval to hire a utility worker bringing the staff to 11 people. In addition, the trustees approved his requests for joint agreements with Lucas County: the 2024-2025 drainage improvements; the Safe Routes to School infrastructure project; and a joint Ohio Public Works Commission application for improvements to Holt, Mitchaw, Merrieweather, Tantara, Cambrian, Brook Side Subdivision roads and other township roads.
The next Board of Township Trustees meeting will be Feb. 6 at 5 pm.
Board of Zoning Appeals
Jason Levine was re-elected chairman and Yuri Osterhout was elected vice chairman of the Sylvania Township Board of Zoning Appeals at the Jan. 8 meeting. Other members of the board include Stephanie Kuhlman, Don Miller, Tim Schlachter, and alternate Tony Malik.
In other business, the BZA approved the request of developers of the property at 6928 W. Central Ave. for a variance request from the 115-square-foot sign to one that is 178 square feet for one of the new building tenants, Pets Supply Plus.
Variances approved
The existing site was the parking area for the former Giant Eagle shopping center. The proposed site will include a new retail center, a new building, and parking area, along with landscape areas. The building is being constructed on one parcel. The intent is to split the parcel into two separate lots between the ALDI portion and the rest of the building whose tenants are Five Below and Pets Supply and the ALDI portion of the building can be sold separately from the remainder of the building. The lot that will be created for the ALDI building will have frontage on Percentum. The proposed lot line between the ALDI and the rest of the building will be the rear yard of that lot. The developers requested variances of the side setback from 10 feet to 0 feet and the rear setback of 20 feet to 0 feet.
Zoning Commission
Mary Himmelein was re-elected chair and John King, vice chair of the Sylvania Township Zoning Commission at the Jan. 10 meeting. Other members of the commission include Tom Creque, Michael Kott, Robert Szabo, and alternate Joe Belinske.
Zoning change approved
In addition, the board approved the zone change from R-2, Medium Residential, to R-4, High Density for 2937-2939 Stoneleigh Dr. allowing the lot to be split. One of the condominium owners has been unable to refinance the property because there is no condo association, a situation, which can be resolved with new zoning and the property division. This zoning change recommendation will be reviewed by the Sylvania Township Trustees at the Feb. 5 meeting.
