Road Construction

Sylvania Township has several projects scheduled throughout the 2025 construction season, including Corey Road North resurfacing that was not completed in 2024 due to Utility company delays.  All projects are tentative and have many variables that could prevent, slow, or delay them. This list does NOT include projects on County or State roads that lie within the Township.

Road Resurfacing:
Ohio Public Works Commission Grant with the Road & Bridge fund is funding the resurfacing and minor repair work for 3.58 miles of Township Roads including Holt Rd., Brookside Subdivision, plats 1 & 2, Cambrian Rd., Bromfield Circle, Merriweather Rd., Tantara Rd., Hasty Rd., and Homerdale Rd. between the city limits and Wakefield Dr.

A second 2.4-mile resurfacing project in 2025 will include Highpoint Dr., Southpoint Dr., Hill River Dr., Far Hills Rd., sections of Vineyard Rd., Trellis Way, Huntley Dr., Chapman Dr., Arbor Way east of Whiteford., Maryhill Dr., Borland Dr., and Merriman Rd.

Concrete Curb and CrossWalk Improvements:
Crosswalk, curb and catch basin repairs are scheduled this summer for many roads in Maple Creek, Park Lands, Brint Crossings, and Park Place Subdivisions.  Notification will be given 24 hours prior to work affecting driveways.

Storm Sewer Basin Repairs:
There are over 90 catch basin repairs located throughout the Township. These crews are small and impose minimal traffic restrictions.

Report Road Issues

  • To report a STOP sign down or missing or to report missing or damaged signs of any kind please contact Sylvania Township Road Department at : (419) 882-0031, ext. 1503.

  • All traffic signals are maintained by the Lucas County Engineers Office. To report problems with a traffic signal, please contact the Lucas County Engineer’s Office at 419-213-2860.

  • The Sylvania Township Road Department is responsible for the removal of dead animals that are along any Township maintained road. To report any dead animal, within the Township, please call Sylvania Township Road Department at 419-882-0031, ext. 1503.

For dead animal pick up on county roads, call the Lucas County Engineer’s office at 419-213-2860, and on state routes, call the Ohio Department of Transportation at 419-825-1383.

  • Potholes are created when moisture seeps into the pavement, freezes, expands, and then thaws. This weakens the pavement. Traffic loosens the pavement even more, and it eventually crumbles and pops out.

Spring temperatures warm the cold pavement, melting and evaporating any frozen water. This creates air pockets that can eventually cause the pavement to break up. A winter of heavy snow or rain and severe freeze/thaw cycles can mean a big pothole season ahead.

The Sylvania Township Road Department will fix potholes on any Township road, please call 419-882-0031, ext.1503.

  • Sylvania Township Road Department is responsible for storm sewers (open ditches, culverts, catch basins, pipes, and curb inlets) located within the public right-of-way. Township personnel inspect, clean, repair, or replace these components as necessary to keep the steady flow of stormwater. The property owner is responsible for storm sewer pipes, catch basins, and ditches located on private property outside the public right-of-way. Right-of-way is normally 25 feet from the center of a roadway.

Preventive maintenance is the best maintenance for storm sewers and ditches. This can only be achieved with the help of Township residents. Only stormwater (which is the precipitation from rain or melting of snow and ice) should go into the storm sewers and ditches. Leaves, sticks, or other yard waste should not be allowed to collect in ditches or in any area that would allow these items to be washed into the storm sewers and catch basins, as they are likely to seriously reduce water flow through the system. Once a storm system is clogged, the resulting backup of water can create hazards for motorists and damage to homes.

If you would like to request an inspection for a possible blocked or clogged storm sewer, please contact the STRD at 419-882-0031, ext. 1503.

What is the public right-of-way?

The public right-of-way is the land reserved for a street, alley, and walkway or for other public purposes. Several items may occupy space within the public right-of-way, such as sidewalks, street lights, traffic signals, fire hydrants and storm sewers. Public utilities such as gas and electric lines, telephone and cable TV lines may also be within the right-of-way.

The Sylvania Township Road Department maintains the Township right-of-way for road mowing and tree trimming, dead animal removal, storm sewers, and street signs.

Sylvania Township requires a permit be obtained from the Lucas County Engineer’s Office 419-213-2860 prior to the start of any excavation within the Township’s right-of-way area.

The only exception would be in the case of an emergency requiring immediate action to protect the public health, safety and welfare, in which case a permit must be obtained at the earliest possible opportunity. This includes driveway aprons, curb, gutter, storm drainage, sewer tie-ins, water main tie-ins, street construction and/or repairs, and road cuts.
