Township Talk - August

New Hires
Sylvania Township Police Chief Sarah Toth introduced three new Police Officers who recently joined the department at the Sylvania Board of Township Trustees Aug. 6 meeting. They are Ben Saddoris, Ashlyn Morey, and Gabriella Utley.

Sylvania Township Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Bennett on behalf of Chief Chris Nye was given authorization to hire four firefighter/paramedics to fill the vacancies created by two retiring and two resigning firefighter/paramedics. Those vacancies will be filled by Aug. 26.

The Assistant Chief’s request to authorize Township Administrator, Oliver Turner, to enter into an agreement with EMS/MC for medic unit billing services was approved by the Sylvania Township Trustees.

Street Lighting Proposals
Following a public hearing, the street lighting petition outlined by Township Administrator Oliver Turner for Eagle Creek Plats 9 and 10 was approved.

The administrator’s request to accept the street lighting proposal for Waterside Plat 11 and to set a public hearing for Sept. 3 was also granted.

The trustees voted to have several new street lighting districts certified by the Lucas County Auditor this year to be eligible for taxation in 2025.

The trustees also authorized the change orders to the scope of repair work at Fire Station No. 1 with the cost not to exceed $13,500 with the total cost of the project not to exceed $344,250. The trustees had okayed an agreement last April with an agreement with Wagner Excavation for the work on the fire station.

The next Sylvania Township Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 5 pm.

Zoning Exemption/Variance
At the Aug. 5 Township Board of Zoning Appeals meeting a four-month exemption for the temporary use of a camper was granted to the homeowner at 6102 Westacre Lane while his kitchen is being restored following a fire. That exemption is subject to the homeowner maintaining his yard; relocating the camper to a driveway, and moving the sanitary storage unit under the camper.
In another matter, the board approved a variance request from the homeowner at 5804 Rudyard Rd. to replace and extend a fence within the required 30 feet to 15 feet. A new septic system had been installed on the property earlier this year and the location of the new leech field inhibits erecting the fence at the 30-foot setback line.

Corey Road Project Delayed
The Corey Road widening and resurfacing project between Whiteford Road and Monroe Street has been postponed until Spring 2025. The necessary relocation of gas lines and utility poles that must be finished to accommodate the road widening has been delayed. Toledo Edison and Columbia Gas anticipate completing the necessary relocations by October of this year. However, that does not allow enough time for the construction phase for this calendar year. Sylvania Township Roads and Service Superintendent Rob Nash plans to repair potholes to ensure a safe driving experience until next year.
